More Than a Resource Fair, This Day Brought Care, Connection, and Community Together

On a chilly 55-degree day in Chicago, the warmth of community could be felt all along Michigan Avenue.

R.E.A.C.H.’s 2nd Annual Family Fun Day and Resource Fair was more than an event. It was a joyful reminder of what happens when love, partnership, and purpose show up in the same place. Families came out. Children laughed. Music filled the air. Vendors shared life-changing information. Food and groceries went home with neighbors. And throughout the day, one message was clear: the Far South Side deserves care that is accessible, compassionate, and rooted in community.

This year’s event was a tremendous step forward. Community members shared encouraging feedback and stakeholder reflections confirmed what many could feel in the moment: R.E.A.C.H. is growing, and so is the community’s trust.​

​

A Bigger Turnout, A Bigger Impact.

​

Hosting the event at HRDI proved to be a great move. The location helped create a welcoming space for families, vendors, and community partners. The tents set up for vendors also caught the attention of drivers traveling down Michigan Avenue, drawing more eyes, more interest, and more neighbors into the experience.

From the moment attendees arrived, they were met with energy, hospitality, and care. The community was beautifully diverse, reflecting the richness of Roseland and the surrounding Far South Side neighborhoods. Families moved from table to table, gathering resources, asking questions, and discovering support that could make a real difference in their lives.

The giveaways were a major highlight. Guests loved receiving food, groceries, gift cards and practical items. But beyond what was placed in bags or handed across tables, the deeper gift was connection. People left knowing there are organizations, providers, advocates, and neighbors who are working together to make sure families are not overlooked.

Resources, Entertainment, and Real Community Joy

 

The day was full of moments that made people smile.

​

The band and step show brought energy and pride. The DJ kept the atmosphere alive, and the line dancing received amazing reviews from attendees. The photo booth quickly became a popular stop, giving families and friends a chance to capture memories from the day. Live interviews on site were also a success, creating space for voices from the community to be heard and celebrated.

​

For the children, the costume characters were a hit. They helped keep kids happy, engaged, and entertained, allowing parents and caregivers to visit resource tables, talk with vendors, and enjoy the day with a little more ease.

​

This is what R.E.A.C.H. means by whole-person support. Sometimes support looks like healthcare information. Sometimes it looks like help finding services. Sometimes it looks like a hot meal, a bag of groceries, a child smiling with a costume character, or a neighbor learning that someone cares enough to show up.

Connecting Families to Care That Continues Beyond the Event

 

The resources shared at Family Fun Day reflect the heart of R.E.A.C.H.’s larger work. Through its programs, R.E.A.C.H. helps connect residents and families to support in key areas such as:

Prenatal Care: helping mothers and families access personalized assessments, provider connections, primary care linkages, and health education throughout pregnancy.

​

Behavioral Health: providing compassionate support for mental, emotional, and social healing, including case management, counseling, care transitions, medication support, and follow-up care.

​

Community Support: connecting individuals, families, and community members with vital information, advocacy, resources, and action opportunities that strengthen access to care.

​

R.E.A.C.H. knows that strong communities are built through relationships. That is why events like Family Fun Day matter. They give residents a chance to meet the people behind the resources, ask questions in a comfortable environment, and leave with practical next steps.

​

The organization also received a pool of emails from attendees after the event, which means the connection did not end when the tents came down. Families want to stay informed. Community members want to stay engaged. And R.E.A.C.H. is committed to keeping that momentum going.
