A Respectful Care Shower to Remember

A celebration of respectful maternity care and community partnership

On November 15, 2025, Roseland Community Hospital’s Labor and Delivery team, The New Roseland Community Hospital, and the Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative (ILPQC) hosted a joyful Respectful Care Shower at the Blue Door Neighborhood Center.

After two years of traditional brunch-style events, the team listened to community feedback and reimagined the gathering as a baby–shower–themed celebration—complete with games, prizes, and warm conversation. As R.E.A.C.H. (Roseland Equity & Community Driven Health Collaborative), we were proud to stand alongside our partners and share in a day that felt both festive and deeply meaningful.

The room was filled with the energy of a real baby shower: decorated tables, laughter, friendly competition, and applause as families won giveaways and participated in shower-style games. Underneath the fun, though, was a powerful purpose—to reinforce a culture where every birthing person feels respected, informed, and supported.

Guests visited community resource tables staffed by organizations like R.E.A.C.H., Blue Door Neighborhood Center, and Mommy’s Gift to Me, who joined as a special partner this year. Together, we offered information on maternal wellness, mental health, postpartum support, and other services that wrap around families beyond the hospital stay.

Centering Respectful Care

Throughout the event, Roseland highlighted its ongoing work with ILPQC’s Respectful Care Practices, which emphasize:

  • Listening carefully to patient concerns

  • Clear, compassionate communication

  • Respect for birth plans and family involvement

  • Informed consent and dignity in every interaction

  • Attention to pain management, postpartum education, and mental health

These principles weren’t just mentioned in passing—they were woven into conversations, printed materials, and the stories we heard from both staff and families.

Honest Conversation & Shared Progress

A panel featuring a physician, nurse, and doula created space for honest reflection. Panelists celebrated Roseland’s progress, shared real stories of impact, and spoke openly about the work ahead to reduce disparities and ensure equity in maternal outcomes. Attendees were invited to ask questions, offer feedback, and help shape what respectful care looks like moving forward.

From our R.E.A.C.H. perspective, this openness was one of the most encouraging parts of the day. It showed that Roseland isn’t treating respectful care as a slogan—it’s inviting the community into the process of change.

R.E.A.C.H.’s Role and Gratitude

As R.E.A.C.H., we were honored to:

  • Share resources aimed at advancing birth equity

  • Connect directly with birthing people and their families

  • Listen to the experiences and needs driving this work

We left the Respectful Care Shower feeling hopeful and grateful—proud to be part of an event that responded to community voices by making the day more joyful, more accessible, and more reflective of the people it serves.

One message echoed clearly as the celebration ended:

Every birthing family in Roseland deserves respect, quality care, and unwavering support.

We’re thankful to Roseland Community Hospital’s Labor and Delivery Department, The New Roseland Community Hospital, ILPQC, Blue Door Neighborhood Center, and all of our partners for a responsive, uplifting, and impactful event.

R.E.A.C.H. looks forward to continuing this journey together—ensuring that birth stories in Roseland begin with dignity, respect, and love.
